Parents often ask about cosmetic treatments and whether their children can benefit from them now or if it would be better to wait. At Kalamazoo Pediatric Dentistry, we can guide you through cosmetic procedures that can be beneficial for your child’s dental health and self-esteem, and most of the time it's best to wait until your child is done growing.
Cosmetic Procedures: Cosmetic Bonding
Cosmetic bonding is a great option for chipped or broken teeth. It’s not uncommon for a child’s tooth to chip from a fall or accident. Once we have determined that the remaining tooth is healthy, we can discuss bonding.
During this procedure, we will match a bonding material to your child’s natural tooth shade. We prep the chipped area and then apply the bonding material. It is cured and then shaped so that it is smooth and attractive.
Bonding is also an option for children with naturally small teeth. A single cosmetic bonding procedure can transform a child’s smile. Keep in mind that the color of the material cannot be changed and that your child will need to eat cautiously to prevent chipping the area again. But overall, tooth bonding is a simple and affordable cosmetic procedure with amazing results.
Cosmetic Procedures: Teeth Whitening
We won’t always recommend that your child have their teeth whitened. There are some situations that warrant the procedure but in our experience, teeth whitening can encourage poor dental habits as young patients view it as an alternative to proper brushing and flossing. To qualify for teeth whitening, your child should display excellent oral hygiene habits and be mature enough to understand the procedure and risks.
